What’s next for SIRI

Wonder where we might see SIRI next? I think we will see her integrate. It has already been released that Mercedes intends to integrate her with some of their upcoming models. I think this is just paving the way for further integration, and I don’t think she will just integrate with hardware, I think she will integrate with apps as well.

It will probably be on the developer to make their apps work with SIRI. But can you picture driving down the road telling Pandora to skip to the next track, or to thumb up a song you like? How about telling MotionX to re-route you? I can also see some interesting applications for gaming too, things like changing weapons in shooters, etc. The list doesn’t stop there. You may be using your voice as a remote shutter release for group photos or to post your status update to Facebook. I think it would be great to tell SIRI to promote my latest blog article on Twitter. Hopefully we will get some phone control with SIRI as well. For example. turning on and off WIFI.

SIRI integration with apple hardware will be cool, too. I think we will be able to choose what to watch on our Apple TV’s just by telling SIRI to play the latest episode of How I Met Your Mother on Netflix. I doubt it will stop there. I think we will be remote controlling our Mac’s via our voices as well.

If apple goes the same route they did with hardware integration on third party products we might even see SIRI telling us our blood pressure, or when our steaks are done. I’m personally waiting for the iFlush the SIRI controlled toiled flusher. Think of all the cheeky comments she could make about that one.

Just like the original iPhone came to us with few options, Apple expanded it into it’s own computer ecosystem. I expect they will do the same with SIRI.

Apple’s 3D Camera Patent

As reported by Patently Apple, Apple has filled a patent for a 3D camera.  This camera will utilize new depth sensors with laser and radar technologies to create a 3D image.  The technology in the article looks pretty awesome, but don’t expect to see it in the iPhone 5.

This story will most likely rekindle the 3D camera rumors for the next iPhone.  Don’t get your hopes up when you see these reports.  While I do believe apple is working on bringing 3D cameras to the iPhone, the patent is just being filed, it won’t make the next version. Apple generally has a product in development for a year or more before releasing it.  Not to mention the obvious problem of figuring how to power LIDAR with the iPhone already strained battery.

The other thing is that Apple tends to file a lot of patents and many of them never make their way to production.  Anyone remember the patent for the iMac touch?  Don’t get me wrong, I am not being a negative Nancy here.  I hope I’m wrong and we see this in the next phone.  I am just saying don’t get your hopes up.

RUMORS!!!

(Image Courtney of http://www.guidespot.com)

Today Reuters reported that Apple will release an iPhone with a 4.6 inch display in Q2 of 2012.  I think we have heard this one before, along with the 7 inch iPad and the iPhone mini.  This story got so much press it even made the Drudge Report.  Don’t believe the rumors, it’s not gonna happen.  Every year we are subject to iPhone rumors until the day of the release.  Then about a week later, the iPad rumors start ’til it’s released, then wash, rinse, repeat.  My personal favorite is the rumor about the slide out keyboard on the iPhone.

To make matters worse Reuters got part of the story wrong.  They claimed the Galaxy S II has a 4.6 inch screen when it actually has a 4.3.  They cite their source as a South Korean reporter.  Obviously they didn’t fact check the story and it must be a slow news day for them.

Lastly, I don’t think Apple will be releasing the phone in Q2.  They may announce it in Q2 but it won’t be released until summer at best, and probably late summer at that.  The latest iPhone was released this past October.  It is extremely unlikely that Apple will release a new phone when the current model is only about 6 months old.  It’s more likely the announcements will go something like this:

  • Q2 iOS Announcement & Release
  • Q3 iPhone 5 or “The New iPhone” Announcement
  • Q4 New iPhone Release
